Why underarms smell (sweat isn't the problem)

Here is something that sounds wrong the first time you hear it.
Sweat does not smell.
Fresh sweat, straight out of the gland, is close to odourless. It is mostly water with some salt in it. If you have spent years assuming your sweat is the problem, this is worth knowing, because it changes what you should be doing about it.
Where the smell actually comes from
Your skin is covered in bacteria. Not because you are unclean — everybody's is, and most of it is doing useful work.
Some of those bacteria feed on the compounds in sweat. As they break them down, they release the by-products that we recognise as body odour.
So the smell is not coming from your body. It is coming from the bacteria that live on it, and it appears after the sweat does, not at the same time.
This is why you can walk out of a shower, sweat immediately in the heat, and not smell for a while. The sweat is there. The bacteria have not caught up yet.
Not all sweat is the same
You have two kinds of sweat gland, and they do not behave alike.
Eccrine glands
These are all over your body, and they are your cooling system. When you are hot, they release a thin, watery sweat onto the skin. It evaporates, and evaporation pulls heat off you.
This sweat is mostly water and salt. Bacteria do not get much out of it, which is why a sweaty forehead does not smell the way underarms do.
Apocrine glands
These are concentrated in a few places, and your underarms are the main one. They switch on around puberty, and they empty into hair follicles rather than straight onto the skin.
What they produce is different — thicker, and containing proteins and fats. That is a much better meal for bacteria.
Put those two facts together and you have your answer. Underarms smell because that is where the richer sweat, the warmth, the trapped moisture and the bacteria all overlap. It is the one part of your body designed to hold all four.
Why stress sweat is worse
You will have noticed this. A hot afternoon leaves you damp. Ten minutes before a presentation leaves you damp and distinctly aware of it.
That is not your imagination. Heat sweat is largely eccrine — the watery, low-odour kind. Stress and nerves trigger the apocrine glands, and apocrine sweat is the kind bacteria do the most with.
So the sweat that arrives exactly when you least want it is also the sweat most likely to smell. Unfair, but that is the mechanism.
What makes it worse day to day
Humidity. Sweat cools you by evaporating. When the air is already saturated, it cannot evaporate properly, so it sits on your skin instead — warm, damp, and undisturbed. Bacteria could not ask for better.
Synthetic fabrics. Polyester and nylon hold odour in a way cotton does not. Bacteria and their by-products cling to the fibres, which is why a synthetic shirt can smell faintly even after a wash, and start smelling again the moment you warm up in it.
Tight sleeves. Less airflow, more trapped moisture.
Shaving. Less hair means less surface for sweat to cling to, which helps. But a fresh shave also leaves the skin irritated, and irritated skin does not take kindly to a harsh product applied straight afterwards.
What you ate. Garlic, onion, strong spices, alcohol and coffee can all make their way into your sweat. This is usually temporary and it is not a sign that anything is wrong.
Where most deodorants go wrong
Knowing all this, look at what is in a typical bottle.
A lot of them are mostly fragrance. Fragrance does not deal with bacteria — it sits on top of the smell and hopes to win. For a few hours you get perfume and body odour at the same time, which is worse than either alone.
Many also lead with alcohol. Alcohol does knock bacteria back initially, but it evaporates fast, and it is drying. Used daily on thin underarm skin, especially after shaving, it tends to leave you irritated. And then there are antiperspirants, which take the other route: block the sweat duct so less sweat arrives in the first place. That works. But it fixes odour by shutting down a normal function, when the odour was never really about the sweat.
Deal with the bacteria instead
If the smell comes from bacteria, the sensible place to intervene is the bacteria.
That is what Phitkari does. Practical things that help
- Dry your underarms properly after a shower. Damp skin straight into a shirt is the ideal setup for bacteria. This one small habit does more than people expect.
- Wear cotton and linen when you can, especially in humid weather.
- Apply to clean, dry skin. Any deodorant works better on skin that is actually dry.
- Wash synthetics properly. If a shirt smells the moment you sweat in it, the odour was still in the fabric before you put it on.
- Do not layer product on top of yesterday's product. Wash first.
The short version
Your sweat is not the problem. The bacteria that feed on it are. Underarms smell because they are the one place where rich sweat, warmth, trapped moisture and bacteria all meet.
You can block the sweat, mask the smell, or deal with the bacteria. We think the third one makes the most sense — and it is the only one of the three that lets your body carry on doing what it is supposed to.
